Kanjon reke Uvac

“Uvac” is a nature reserve in southwest Serbia between Sjenica and Nova Varoš. This reserve is known by meanders, caves, and lately more and more by griffon vultures. First, it should be noted that it is a canyon of the river Uvac with its tributaries. They say that before the construction of accumulative lakes canyon was much more beautiful and vivid, but its beauty today completely overshadows all nature lovers. For this canyon locals say that it is the Serbian Colorado. Three artificial lakes here are Ušac, Zlatarsko and Radoinjsko. River has carved meanders into the limestone and unique and the most outstanding ones are those on Ušačko lake. You can have breathtaking view from Molitva (Prayer) viewpoint. The nearby hill is so named because in ancient times people from nearby village were praying here for rain, wind and everything that they needed from God and nature. Another vantage point from which also is breathtaking view is Veliki Vrh (Big Top). The aforementioned caves are in fact the longest cave system in Serbia and consists of Ušac cave, Ice cave and sinkhole. Its length is a whopping 6185 m. Caves have 12 halls and beautiful cave formations.

Attraction of Uvac that is probably higher than meanders is royal bird – the griffon vulture. Griffon vulture is a rare species of vulture that was facing extinction. At the beginning of 1990 – s Fund for the protection of birds of prey “Griffon vulture” was founded and thanks to them, the number of individuals increased from the seven pairs backthen to more than 600 individuals today. This bird is on the coats of arms of well-known Serbian families Nemanjić, Mrnjavčević, Lazarević and Crnojević and many other emblems in the world. What is interesting about the griffon vulture is their lifetime love. In fact, for them there is no adultery. Couples are together the whole life and together take care of their young.
